Overview

A hunter who fights at range with a longbow or up close with hatchets, not only a bow class. Official· XLGAMES / Steam

Steam news names Ranger as one of four playable classes. Creative Director Jay Lee said the Ranger with the hatchets in official PvP footage was Producer Ham. Longbow as the second Ranger weapon is from MMORPG.com's class intro; Steam names a Longbow Fire Arrow retune without restating the class pairing.

What we know

  • Two launch weapons: Longbow and Hatchets, each with its own trait tree.
  • Classes are gender-locked at Early Access launch.

Starter build: Storm Hatchet (lightning, with Longbow opener) →

Starter build: Burn Longbow (fire) →

Still being collected

  • Full skill list and trait tree nodes for both weapons.

Lore. MMORPG.com's class intro ties the Ranger to Tahyang Kahlzit, described as the hero of the Firran, who wandered the world and later fought Kyrios. Reported· MMORPG.com

The Ranger is a hunter who fights at range with a Longbow or up close with Hatchets. MMORPG.com’s class preview says the Ranger is “more than a mere archer”. It is one of the four Early Access classes.

Who should play the Ranger

Pick the Ranger if you like picking your moments, whether that means shooting from range or darting in and out. The class has both an archer path and a melee path, so you can choose without leaving the class. Classes are gender locked at launch, and Steam news has not named the Ranger’s locked gender. XLGAMES plans gender choice one class at a time, starting with the Warrior.

Longbow or Hatchets: which to start with

MMORPG.com describes the Longbow as precision and pursuit: Rapid Fire on a marked target, Fire Arrow, Ice Arrow to immobilize, Aimed Shot at a distant target, and Crescent Kick as a spinning counter. The Hatchets use the power of the storm, with lightning and wind: Stormsplitter, Overcharge, Shocking Kick, Storm Chaser and Wind Blade.

A sensible approach is to take the Longbow if you want distance and clean openings, and the Hatchets if you want to stay in the fight and counter. Creative Director Jay Lee said the Ranger with the Hatchets in official PvP footage was Producer Ham. XLGAMES also reworked the Longbow’s Fire Arrow and tuned the Hatchets before launch.

How the Ranger gets stronger

Every level gives stat points. The progression post lists six primary stats: Strength raises physical attack, Intelligence raises magic attack, Agility boosts crit chance and some physical attack, Constitution increases HP and crit resistance, Endurance increases stamina and defense, and Talent supports magic attack and reduces equipment penalties. One point always buys one stat, so there is no scaling math to do before you commit. The cited Burn Longbow (fire) build puts points into Agility and Talent, while a critical (physical) Longbow build goes Agility and Strength instead. Those are reported spreads, not our testing, so compare the attack numbers on the character screen, which previews changes before you lock a point in.

Each weapon has its own trait tree, so Longbow and Hatchets progress separately. Nodes can give stat boosts, new skills, or changes to how a skill works. Trait points come from Raeven’s Coilstones, each near a powerful boss, not from level. See skills and traits.

What launch-week sources say (Nov 4)

These are reports from creators and guide sites, not our own testing, and most were written on the October demo. Each line links its source.

  • Hatchets: three creators agree it is the strongest PvP pick. A creator weapon tier list (15:08) gives it the only S in both PvE and PvP; Nerd Bird (4:56) says it will probably be the most dominant PvP class; Kybuza (5:27) calls the thunder Hatchet overpowered right now for PvP. The tier list and Nerd Bird also call it the hardest weapon to master. It sits at S on our PvP board.
  • Longbow: the same tier list (14:46) rates it B in both PvE and PvP: safe and simple, but arrows have travel time and can be blocked or parried. Massively Overpowered found aiming charged shots janky in the demo.
  • Class overall: GamerBlurb’s pre-release class list puts the Ranger at S for early solo progression.
  • Starter builds: a lightning Hatchet setup and a burn Longbow setup are on the Hatchet and Longbow pages, with sources.

What we are still collecting

Early Access is live. We are adding the following from public sources as they appear, each with a link and a date:

  • Which weapon players and creators say levels faster early on.
  • Player reports on the reworked Fire Arrow.
  • How creators describe Hatchet counters against bosses and in PvP channels, and how aiming feels given the planned soft-lock work.

Weapons

The Ranger weapon pairing comes partly from press class previews; each weapon carries its own tag.

Ranger FAQ

Is Ranger a class in ArcheAge Chronicles?

Yes. Steam news lists Ranger as one of the four playable classes. Creative Director Jay Lee said the Ranger with the hatchets in official PvP footage was Producer Ham. Class preview coverage also pairs Ranger with a longbow.

Official· XLGAMES / Steam
Are ArcheAge Chronicles classes gender locked?

Yes, at Early Access launch. XLGAMES is adding gender choice one class at a time, starting with a female Warrior planned for the first update in December 2026. The stated goal is to remove gender locks from every class by full release.

Official· XLGAMES / Steam
What weapons does each class use?

Each class has two weapons at Early Access, with a third planned later. Official posts tie Warrior to longsword, greatsword, and a planned Gladius, and Ranger to hatchets. Class preview coverage pairs Ranger with longbow as well, Berserker with axe and shield or warhammer, and Mage with Elemental Staff or Wavesword.

Longbow, axe, and the Mage pairings are from class preview coverage, not from a Steam sentence that names those weapons as that class's kit.

Official· XLGAMES / Steam
What is the best class in ArcheAge Chronicles?

There is no settled best class yet. Early launch-week sources point to the Berserker with Axe and Shield as the most forgiving solo pick and the Ranger's Hatchets as the strongest PvP weapon, but most of them were written on the October demo. The tier list shows each placement with its sources.
